Two downtown St. Paul hotels owned by Mille Lacs Corporate Ventures have temporarily suspended operations, citing "elevated safety and security concerns."

The InterContinental St. Paul Riverfront and DoubleTree St. Paul Downtown ceased accepting guests at noon on Jan. 18, according to a statement shared via Facebook from Mille Lacs Corporate Ventures board of directors. The company, a business entity of the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe tribal government, didnt provide details about the specific concerns or an expected reopening.
"We apologize for this inconvenience and are contacting guests to offer re-accommodation to other properties at no charge while these hotels are temporarily closed," the company said. "The safety and security of all of our guests and employees is always our top priority."

At Taste of East African in Minneapolis, the manager and owner are the only employees who come to work now, serving new customers who arent familiar with the food but are trying to support a restaurant challenged by a federal immigration enforcement surge.

Gig workers arent accepting orders for delivery because they, too, are afraid.
"Even if you tell ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) youre a citizen, they wont listen, so everyone is scared," said the restaurants manager, Hibaq Nimale, who is a U.S. citizen raised in Kenya as a refugee from Somalia.
Businesses across large swaths of Minneapolis have taken a hit as President Donald Trumps administration carries out a massive immigration operation that has spurred protests. As staff and customers stay home and protesters target businesses they see as aiding federal immigration enforcement, countless stores have temporarily closed, canceled events or reduced hours. Some hotels that housed federal immigration officers and saw protests have stopped accepting reservations altogether, while Minneapolis-based Target Corp. also has seen protests.
